The Songs Vin Played for 07/04/1999

There are three essential Commandments:

Respect The Elders.
Embrace The New.
Encourage The Impractical and Improbable, Without Bias.

These are the songs I played on WNEW-FM / NY on IDIOT'S DELIGHT 7/4/99

Tonight's guest—RICHARD BARONE—conversation only

"Rub-A-Dub on 57th Street
It's our Independence Day!"

—David Byrne, "Independence Day" (1989)

I opened with the "I'll be there" scene from John Ford's 1940 film version John Steinbeck's "The Grapes Of Wrath," (1940), featuring Henry Fonda as Tom Joad and Jane Darwell as Ma Joad.

Two artists pop up at several points during tonight's show—Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen. Since seeing "Joni's Jazz"—the wonderful concert on 7/1 at Summerstage which featured a diverse and inspired group of artists performing Mitchell's music—I've been listening to lots of Joni...and I found it quite necessary to touch base with her tonight. As for Bruce...well, 4th of July and Bruce have gone hand-in-hand for many of us for many years now. A 4th of July radio show without plenty of Springsteen would be like a visit to Long Beach Island without lunch at Morrison's.

THE BAND Tears Of Rage
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN The Ghost Of Tom Joad

RICHARD BARONE Clouds Over Eden

RICHARD BARONE—guest—conversation only

Richard will be the host of "The Beat Goes On, Vol. 4" revue at The Bottom Line on Friday July 16. This edition of that continuing series of musical celebrations of Sixties rock'n'roll is subtitled "Hullabaloo" in honor of the 1965-66 American television pop showcase (most remembered by yours truly for its caged go-go dancers!). This show will break with its own tradition by actually featuring two original performers from that era—Billy J. Kramer and Richard Gottehrer—as well as producer/performer Tony Visconti (who produced T. Rex and David Bowie). During my conversation with Richard we played many of the original recordings of songs which will be performed by a variety of contemporary New York performers in what promises to be a wonderful show. (And there will be go-go dancers!...whether caged or not remains to seen.)

THE STRANGELOVES I Want Candy
THE PRISSTEENS Sorrow

These two songs were written and produced by legendary New York music figure, Richard Gottehrer, who will be making a rare performance appearance on 7/16. The Strangeloves was his band back in the Sixties; The Prissteens are a contemporary band he recently produced.

BILLY J. KRAMER & THE DAKOTAS Little Children
DEL SHANNON Keep Searchin' (I'll Follow The Sun)

Billy J. Kramer will be appearing at the 7/16 show.

LESLIE GORE You Don't Own Me
LESLIE GORE Sunshine Lollipops & Rainbows

DONOVAN Catch The Wind (to be performed on 7/16 by Freedy Johnston!)

THE KINKS All Day And All Of The Night
WE FIVE You Were On My Mind
THEM Mystic Nights

JAMES BROWN Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, Part I
THE ROLLING STONES Paint It Black
WILSON PICKETT In The Midnight Hour

PETER & GORDON Woman (written by "Bernard Webb" a.k.a. Paul McCartney)
THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL You Didn't Have To Be So Nice

RICHARD BARONE Sanctified (unreleased new recording, produced by Tony Visconti)
THE BONGOS The Bulrushes (Richard's former band)

THE KNICKERBOCKERS Lies (this is the song Richard will perform on 7/16)
SONNY & CHER The Beat Goes On

Richard's visit ended at this point and the show returned to the present (so to speak)...

JUNE & THE EXIT WOUNDS Highway Noise
TRISH MURPHY Me Behind The Wheel (pre-release)
NADINE So That I Don't Miss You
KRIS KRISTOFFERSON (with Jackson Browne) Me & Bobby McGee (pre-release)

I noted the sad news which came across the wire earlier on Sunday that MARK SANDMAN—lead vocalist, bass player and songwriter for the Boston-based trio Morphine—suffered a heart attack while performing at a music festival outside Rome, Italy on Saturday. He could not be revived by a doctor at the site and was pronounced dead in an ambulance on route to a hospital. He was 47 years old.

MORPHINE Wishing Well
MORPHINE Buena
MORPHINE Whisper
MORPHINE Early To Bed

I wondered if my memory of seeing Morphine open for Bob Dylan at the Beacon was an accurate one. My friend Heather Eatman has since reminded me that it was Mark's earlier group, Treat Her Right, that opened for Dylan—not Morphine. I can't remember the year, but it was probably sometime in the late 1980s.

VAN MORRISON Almost Independence Day (1972)
DONALD BYRD Cristo Redentor (1963) (which can be found on the Side Man album of music featured in that Broadway play)
JONI MITCHELL Blue Motel Room
JOHN LEWIS Willow Weep For Me (pre-release) (solo piano performance by the legendary member of the Modern Jazz Quartet)

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Independence Day
MOXY FRUVOUS Independence Day (pre-release)
NICKY HOLLAND Independence Day
CAETANO VELOSO O Navio Negreiro (The Slave Ship)
THE O'JAYS Ship Ahoy (1973)

The various "Independence Day" and "4th Of July" songs I played during the show are all different songs sharing the same title (except for Dave Alvin's song which was originally recorded by X). But the following three recordings are of the same song—Bob Marley's classic "Redemption Song."

BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS Redemption Song (the original version on Uprising)
SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK Redemption Song
SPEECH Redemption Song (pre-release)
LARGO featuring TAJ MAHAL Freedom Ride
ELLIOTT MURPHY Just A Story From America
LITTLE STEVEN I Am A Patriot
PETER TOSH (with Mick Jagger) (You Gotta Walk And) Don't Look Back

The first four songs in the following set were chosen and sequenced by tonight's "substitute" producer, Kate Scelsa, my daughter. I picked the last three, making it a father-daughter endeavor. (Producer Manning had the night off.)

LOOPER Columbo's Car
R.E.M. Daysleeper
HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH The Long Grift (Stephen Trask, lead vocal)
PRIMITIVE RADIO GODS Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth etc....
TOM WAITS Hold On
ELEANOR McEVOY Please Heart, You're Killing Me
WOOD Straight Lines (pre-release)

DUKE ELLINGTON Diminuendo In Blue And Crescendo In Blue (big band performance July 7, 1956 at the Newport Jazz Festival; featuring Paul Gonsalves, tenor saxophone)

RICHARD "GROOVE" HOLMES Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me (closing theme)

Show ended approximately 3:50 A.M.
