The Songs Vin Played for 08/31/1997

There are three essential Commandments:

Respect The Elders.

Embrace The New.

Encourage The Impractical and Improbable, Without Bias.

These are the songs I played on WNEW-FM / NY on "IDIOT'S DELIGHT" 8/31/97,

another working day in the sad and beautiful world.

"It's a sad and beautiful world ..." — Tom Waits and Roberto Benigni — scene

from the Jim Jarmusch film "Down By Law."

... for DIANA ...

MARK EITZEL On A Clear Day ...

(live performance on the show, 6/30/96)

ELVIS COSTELLO & THE BRODSKY QUARTET Lost In The Stars

(from "September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill" V/A)

BOB DYLAN Highlands (pre-release from the new album)

JOHN CULLUM On A Clear Day ...

(title song from the original B'way cast album)

PORNO FOR PYROS Tonight (the "West Side Story" song)

(from "Music For Our Mother Ocean" V/A)

PAUL WELLER Up In Suze's Room

BOB DYLAN Love Sick (from the new album's released 4-song EP)

A visit to the show and a meeting with me was given as a birthday gift to

listener Jonathan Brooks by his girlfriend Kristina Grish. I did not know

these people prior to tonight. Kristina had approached me with her idea to

give me as a surprise gift because Jonathan is a very devoted listener to the

show. Something in her voice reminded me of my niece Laurie and I was touched

by her desire to do something really special for her boyfriend (and impressed

by her chutzpah!); and so I agreed to the visit. They proved to be a charming

young couple and chatting with them on the air made me feel somewhat like the

aging Groucho Marx on "You Bet Your Life" — "Well, you're a swell couple of

kids ... but now it's time to play our game." NOTE: I never do stuff like

this! This was a total and complete aberration. Do not attempt to follow in

their footsteps.

YO LA TENGO Center Of Gravity

TINDERSTICKS w/ISABELLA ROSSELLINI A Marriage Made In Heaven

ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM & ELIS REGINA Aguas De Marco (Waters Of March)

DIMITRI FROM TOKYO Toujours L'Amore

(from a compilation of offbeat dance music by various artists which Producer

Manning picked up on her recent visit to Scotland; it's called "Sounds Like

Paris" on Pan Recordings, distributed by a London-based company called Pias

Recordings — phone 0181-324-2500.)

JOHN SOUTHWORTH Let's Jazz All You Young Aliens

ASTRUD GILBERTO Call Me

The John Southworth album "Mars Pennsylvania" is released on A&M in Canada

only; it can be ordered by phone at 1-800-563-7234. I have been informed that

both the Tower Records and HMV chain stores in New York will be carrying this

at some point in the next few weeks.

business) called with information about the upcoming Wim Wenders film "The End

Of Violence" and we chatted for a while about movies.

BILLY JOEL To Make You Feel My Love

LOTTE LENYA It Never Was You

BOB DYLAN To Make You Feel My Love (pre-release from the new album)

R.E.M. Nightswimming

ERIC MATTHEWS My Morning Parade

BELLE & SEBASTIAN Seeing Other People

Speaking still of films: I finally rented Steve Buscemi's "Trees Lounge" and

found it quite charming (in a shaggy and certainly inebriated way). I forgot

to mention that Carol Kane (Simka of "Taxi" fame) is in the movie (she plays

the bartender) and she's wonderful, as is the entire cast of New York-based

actors. Buscemi manages to get beat up and bloodied by an irate parent in one

scene, but by typical Buscemi standards this is a non-violent, relatively

mild, very down-to-earth and ultimately rather gentle film.

DYSTOPIA ONE Steve Buscemi

NICK CAVE Mack The Knife

(from "September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill" V/A)
