The Songs Vin Played for 07/06/1997

There are three essential Commandments:

Respect The Elders.

Embrace The New.

R.E.M. How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us

I spoke by phone with historian Doug Brinkley (author of "The Majic Bus,"

editor of the recently published letters of Hunter Thompson, and biographer of

Jimmy Carter) who was a friend of the televison journalist Charles Kuralt who

died in New York City on July 4 at the age of 62. Doug spoke about the

little-known friendship between Kuralt and Hunter Thompson and philosophized

about the historical significance of Kuralt's famous "On The Road" essays.

Doug, who heads up the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the

University of New Orleans, spoke from a small house-on-stilts on the Gulf of

Mexico in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, where he is currently writing a massive

"history of America" to be published next year by Viking Penguin. When he

lived in New York (where he taught at Hofstra University) he was often a guest

on my show.
