The Songs Vin Played for 12/08/1996

There are three essential Commandments:

Respect The Elders.

Embrace The New.

Encourage The Impractical and Improbable, Without Bias.

These are the songs I played on WNEW-NY on "VIN SCELSA's SUNDAY NIGHT" --

12/8/96:

December 8 being the 16th Anniversary of the death of John Lennon.

I was on the air on WNEW on that night in 1980. This is my first 12/8 back on

WNEW, so from time to time during the show I reflected on that still sad

resonant event.

TOM WAITS & ROBERTO BENIGNI It's A Sad And Beautiful World

(dialog excerpt from the Jim Jarmusch film "Down By Law")

JOHN LENNON Excerpt from a tape of him answering questions about life in NYC

(from my collection; this is a cassette tape John made for me sitting in his

kitchen at the Dakota in 1975 answering a series of questions I put to him in

writing about his thoughts on living in New York; it was made for a special

tribute to New York in response to the fiscal crisis the city was undergoing

in 1975. The special was never completed, but I've played this several times

over the years.)

At this point fellow deejay Marty Martinez -- who was a newsroom desk

JOHN LENNON Stand By Me

THE BEATLES Let It Be

Engineer Vanderheyden went squirreling about in the station's tape archives

and found an air check from 12/8/80. Marty, Producer Manning and I listened

to a few minutes of it -- the first minutes of my breaking the news of

Lennon's death, reading the wire reports, trying to remain calm, etc. I had

never heard this tape before. Needless to say, hearing it again (and back on

WNEW) was an extremely emotional and very odd experience for me.
