The Songs Vin Played for 09/04/2004

The Songs Vin Played SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2004 - 8 PM - 12 MIDNIGHT we all have earned a lightness carry my joy on the left carry my pain on the right ... - Bjork, "Who Is It" Eric Ambel and Chip Robinson - guests - conversation and acoustic performance Eric Ambel, known to his friends and fans as "Roscoe", is the famed New York guitarist/songwriter/producer (remember his band The Del Lords back in the 80s?), bar owner (The Lakeside Lounge), long distance cyclist, downhill skier and extraordinary musicologist. He took some time off tonight before preparing to hit the road this fall as lead guitar in Steve Earle's band The Dukes, a gig he's held in that group for several years now in addition to his many other credits (google this cat some day when you have a couple hours to spare!). He's just released a new album, "Knucklehead," on his recently launched Lakeside Lounge Records, as well as re-issued two earlier solo albums which have been out of print for years. Chip Robinson is a member of The Backsliders, one of the many bands Eric has produced over the years; he also plays in several versions of Eric's ever-changing Roscoe's Gang. Since this was the Saturday following the RNC in New York, we talked a lot of politics; but when we moved down to Studio A for the guys to play, Eric noted that he's been in a "George mood" lately - make that Harrison, not Bush - as you'll see from the some of the songs he chose to play live. He and Chip played acoustic guitars; Chip sang backup and did one of own as well, a beaut called "Two Candles." These are the kind of intuitive musicians who follow each others eyes as well as fingers as they wing their way through a song; their interplay - both instrumentally and vocally - was positively amazing. As Eric would put it, Right On! Elly first came to my attention back in the late 80s when she sang with a band called Grace Pool. She's been living a life outside the music world for a while, taking time off to have a family. She's finally decided to test the waters (of the Grace Pool?) again and has just released her first solo album "Wax The Roses," a fact which pleases me greatly. www.ellybrown.net OCT 16 AMY CORREIA. When last Amy last appeared on the show (back in March) we had been playing her fully realized demo album "On Second Thought" - the long overdue follow-up to her 2000 debut "Carnival Love" - for several months and wondering when some smart record company would finally sign this wonderful songwriter and release this terrific record already! Well, Nettwerk America got hip to the woman's grooves and is releasing that very same CD - with a new title, "Lakeville" - in early October. Amy comes back tonight to celebrate ... and give us the skinny on her latest attempts to find the meaning of life and true happiness via too many hours spent surfing the Internet.
