The Songs Vin Played for 03/13/2004

There are three essential Commandments:
     Respect The Elders.
     Embrace The New.
     Encourage The Impractical and Improbable,
     Without Bias.

SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 2004 - 8 PM - 12 MIDNIGHT

This is my mud
These are my wild geese
That's my breath pulling me along
It'll lead me home whenever I please ....

    - Eszter Balint, "Mud"

Jack McDuff     Walking The Dog   B-3in': Organ Jazz (V/A)
(opening theme music)

Talking Heads    Psycho Killer    Stop Making Sense
Wynton Marsalis Quartet    You And Me    The Magic Hour
Eszter Balint    No One    Mud

Eszter Balint - guest - conversation only

Eszter has been involved in theater, film and music since her childhood
in Bulgaria (where she was born), Paris (where her parents first moved
to escape East European Communist oppression) and New York
(where the family finally land in the 1970s); her parents were founding
members of the influential radical theater collective called Squat.  She
appeared in the 1984 Jim Jarmusch indie film classic, Stranger Than
Paradise
and more recently was seen in Steve Buscemi's Trees Lounge.
Her first album, Flicker, came out in 1999.  Her new one, Mud, is released
on Bar-None Records.

Lately I've been inviting musicians to come to the show with some of
their favorite records rather than their instruments.  Without the pressure
of a live radio performance distracting them, I find that very often the
conversation can be more relaxed and intimate.  Most of the
non-Eszter records played during her visit were her selections.

Eszter Balint    Pebbles & Stones    Mud

Sam Phillips    Say What You Mean    Fan Dance
Eszter Balint    What Are You Now    Mud
Randy Newman    Marie    Gold Old Boys

Eszter Balint    Your God    Mud
The Gleaners    This Plane    Blessed

The Gourds    My Name Is Jorge    Cow Fish Fowl Or Pig
Graham Parker    The Rest Is History    Your Country

Eszter Balint    Here We Are    Mud

Eszter Balint    If    Mud
Sons & Daughters    Start To End    Love The Cup
The Mountains Goats    Your Belgian Things    We Shall All Be Healed

I am coming late to The Mountain Goats, who have been making records
since 1995.  I imagine I'm not alone.  The group is basically one man,
John Darnielle, the songwriter and singer.  Home base is Oregon.  I
can't imagine how such literate funny touching unsentimental quirky
heartbreaking unpretentious  music has taken so long to reach my ears!
Well now that is has, now that I've become on obsessed fan, I intend
to spread the word about The Mountain Goats to every open ear.  The
group's two most recent albums are We Shall All Be Healed and Tallahassee.
They are both extraordinary.  I've gone on-line to order everything else.
Stay tuned ...

The Mountain Goats

SUPPORT WFUV!  Become a member!  Go to the web site and join us ... were the only place on New York broadcast radio for quality adult eclectic music played for quality eclectic adults!  Commercial radio is no longer interested in intelligently presenting quality music.  Public radio is our only hope ... it must be supported ... or it will not survive.

THERE IS AN IDIOT’S DELIGHT T-SHIRT!!
I designed it myself.  It's simple, low key and to the point.  It's short-sleeved, in heather gray, with very dark blue (almost black) lettering.   The "3 essential commandments" are on the front and the show name is on the back, all quite unobtrusive, with no station, corporate or commercial logos anywhere.   The shirt is only available through World Hunger Year (it was a Hungerthon '99  premium), for a $50 donation to that fine organization.  For further information, call Sue Leventhal at W.H.Y. –  (212) 629-8850 or visit  http://www.worldhungeryear.org

My friend Engineer Paul has a personal web page http://www.engineerpaul.com, which also contains "The Songs I Played" every week, as well as some of the digital photos he took of guests during our K-ROCK and WNEW days together.

Listener FiL Wisneski runs an indispensable archive of the show lists at http://cherk.com/vin/ for which I am most grateful.

I am also indebted to Listener Scott Perschke, who maintains the Idiot's Delight Digest, an email discussion forum with a wide-ranging scope.
